Bust away the blues with uplifting scents from Scentered

article by Jamie Tolentino

It’s blue Monday again, the day where most of us feel sad and depressed due to a combination of the weather, post-Christmas spending and failing at our New Year’s resolutions to date. However, before you give up on those New Year’s resolutions, try harnessing the power of scent and see how it affects your mood.

Scentered has a “Be Happy” balm which contains a sparkling, aromatic citrus blend, with bright top notes of Pink Grapefruit and Green Mandarin, softened by warm, floral notes of Tagette and Neroli. Claiming to be ‘sunshine in a stick’ the scent brings instant joy to the sniffer. It indeed reminds me of the days where I was in sunny places, so I’d recommend sniffing it together with your favourite pick me up song. Once you feel a bit happier, you can now go back to tackling some of those New Year’s resolutions.

For those who aim to improve their sleep, the “Sleep Well” balm clears the head and relaxes the body with Lavender, Chamomile, Palmarosa and Ho Wood. The Patchouli, Clove and Ylang Ylang heart also brings an oriental twist. This combination is a lot gentler and more balanced than pure Lavender oil which some may find a bit too strong on its own.

For those who aim to tackle their goals, the “Focus” balm helps you to adopt the right frame of mind to perform to the best of your ability. Peppermint, Rosemary Leaf, Clary Sage, Spearmint and Bergamot makes up this scent with a woody base of Cedarwood, Patchouli and Thyme. Sniffing the balm does give you a sense of feeling focussed and inspired.

For those who aim to get over heartbreak (if you just broke up before or after Christmas), the “Love” balm is perfect for when you feel overwhelmed and in need of a hug. It has Orange and Clove, and heartwarming floral Rose and Jasmine with a base of Patchouili, Vanilla Cedarwood and Cabreuva. Sniffing the balm gives you a bit of a sense of comfort and warmth.

For those who just need to maintain their stress levels, the “Stress Less” balm helps to calm you down with Chamomile, Neroli, Mandarin, Rosemary and Sweet Brazilian Orange with a Cedarwood base. I feel like I’m in a spa awaiting treatment when sniffing this balm. Alternatively, the “Escape” balm lets your mind wander far away and let go of everyday worries with the scent of Oud, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Amber and Vanilla combined with Rose floral heart, Birch, Clove and Cinnamon. This balm is a bit more energising and you feel a bit more refreshed but also empowered.

The double whammy of a mindful breathing ritual with aromatherapy can help us let go of negative thoughts and shift our mood to bring a renewed sense of positivity, relieve anxiety and depression, help us focus and build confidence. If I had to choose a balm, it would be the ‘Stress Less’ balm for me as I do find it a quick fix to reset my stress levels and tackle the problem or stressor at hand in a calmer manner, making me less snappy in 2018. The balms can be used as a handy trigger to train the brain to give up unconscious behaviour and adopt new conscious habits for 2018!
