1. Alexander McQueen
You can’t talk about great British fashion designers without mentioning the late Alexander McQueen. What he did for British fashion is immeasurable. His achievements earned him British Designer of the Year four times, as well as the CFDA’s International Designer of the Year award in 2003 and an OBE. Alexander McQueen’s most recognisable designs often feature skulls and have a punk/rock’n’roll feel to them.
Notable mention: I couldn’t not mention Anya Hindmarch who’s undoubtedly in my top 3 designers of all time. Anya’s recent collections have been full of good humour and are endless fun. Her designs can’t help but raise a smile!
There’s also another side to her brand and that’s their luxury bespoke line. Based out of their Pont Street store in London, if you ever get the chance to visit I highly recommend it. It’s compact inside but it’s genuinely the most timeless and elegant store you’ll probably ever visit. While you’re there you must get something monogrammed.
2. Charlotte Olympia
As a shoe girl through and through, I had to mention at least one British shoe designer. No designer is thriving more than the uber talented Charlotte Olympia. Whether it’s her sky-high heels you love or her kitty flats, no one else is leaving their mark on the industry quite like her.
Notable mention: Again, I had to give one of my favourite accessories designers of all time an honourable mention. Charlotte Simone is the ultimate accessories designer, although over the last couple of seasons she has also branched out into ready-to-wear coats and jackets, which are equally gorgeous. If you like your fur (faux or real), Charlotte Simone is the go-to place for scarves, hats and accessories.
3. Jonathan Anderson
Jonathan Anderson is the shining star of the moment in British fashion. As creative director of his own label, J.W. Anderson and also Loewe, he’s currently reigning high in the fashion stakes and everything he touches seems to turn to gold.
The renaissance Loewe is undergoing is incredible and it’s currently been worn and coveted by every editor, blogger and fashionista across the globe.
4. Matthew Williamson
Matthew Williamson is a pillar of talent in British fashion and has been for many years. If you have the budget and you’re looking for a statement party dress then Matthew is your man. Think bright colours, beautiful embellishments and even feathers.
5. Needle & Thread
My fifth selection is probably unexpected but deserved nonetheless. Needle & Thread have burst onto the scene in the last 3 years and for good reason. This contemporary British brand who is under the stewardship of Hannah Coffin specialises in beautifully adorned and embellished pieces. They received instant recognition for offering expertly drawn lace and floral motifs in intricate threads and sequins at a very competitive price point. If you don’t have anything from this brand in your wardrobe, you should definitely think about investing.
