One of my favourite things about living in the UK is the changing seasons. I love that we can have distinct seasonal wardrobes and alternate them out every 6 months and obviously, double the clothes equals double the fun! I use to live in Los Angeles and although the constant sunshine was lovely, I found myself yearning for chunky knits, layers and boots.
Although arguably with the seasons blurring more and more in the UK, I definitely think our spring/summer and autumn/winter wardrobes are becoming far more intertwined. With the recent Indian summer we’ve had, I found myself still buying pretty summer tops in mid to late September which didn’t leave me with a lot of time to wear and enjoy them before the weather turned. That being said I’ve spent the last couple of weeks working on turning my summer wardrobe into a winter-friendly one!
This ASOS off the shoulder top was my favourite summer purchase and I’m determined to get ample wear out of it in the coming months. Just because something automatically seems season driven there are so many ways you can style your summer pieces and adapt them to keep you warm.
5 Top tips
By layering my off the shoulder top over a polo neck it’s suddenly gone from summery to “winter appropriate”. The best thing about dressing for the cold is layering, as it really gives you that opportunity to play around with textures and mix different styles.
2) Accessories – hats, scarves, gloves
A scarf is my go-to accessory during the winter. During these in-between months when it’s not quite cold enough for a full blown coat, a scarf and chunky knit is usually the answer. Never underestimate how toasty a great scarf, hat and gloves can be. If you’re looking for a fabulous scarf I highly recommend accessory extraordinaire, Charlotte Simone.
You’ll be surprised just how many of your summer skirts and dresses can be worn with tights. I think there’s a misconception that pretty tea dresses or delicate lace skirts need to be worn with bare legs but that unexpected mix of styles is one of my favourite looks. I’m a particular fan of wooly tights (like the ones we wore at school) paired with pretty dresses and a fabulous pair of brogues.
A pair of boots is a winter staple. Once you’ve found your perfect pair I assure you, you’ll be wearing them over and over again. Check out Teral’s post on how to How to Wear Shorts and Over The Knee Boots In Autumn for more styling tips.
5) Dresses over jeans trend
The whole dresses over jeans look is going to be massive over the coming months. With some of the biggest influencers in the industry trailblazing this trend, if you’re not convinced now, I’m almost certain you’ll be rocking the look before the spring arrives!
